The Hydropower Engineering Fellow opportunity with the Water Power Technologies Office is now accepting applications through April 30, 2021 5:00:00 PM EST.
What will I be doing? As a member of the team, you will both learn and contribute across the range of activities associated with managing applied research. The office is also highly receptive to new ideas that fellows may have regarding research topics and strategies.
Why should I apply? You will collaborate on the office's HydroWIRES Initiative, whose mission is to understand and support hydropower's role in a 100% clean energy future. The HydroWIRES Initiative, as the office's $15M grid integration program, includes research in optimizing hydropower operations and resource planning and developing innovative technologies that enable hydropower to operate more flexibly. HydroWIRES efforts include power/water system modeling, valuation and technoeconomic analysis, innovative technology R&D, convening stakeholders, and international collaboration.
Mechanical or electrical engineering experience specific to energy generation and storage resources, including component- or system-level design of hydropower plants, renewable energy integration, or power system operations.
Experience with on-the-ground design, development, or operation of energy projects, and in particular hydropower (including pumped storage hydropower), is preferred.
Experience with complex energy project development is a plus, e.g., related to supporting pumped storage hydropower demonstration and deployment, relicensing existing hydropower projects for increased flexibility, adding batteries toexisting hydropower to create hybrid configurations, or exploring use cases for hydropower and storage in remote communities.
Experience working with a utility, power producer, NGO, or other industry entity on practical applications, either in a research or industry context, is a plus.
Capability to identify innovative technology gaps and operational strategies that can increase new pumped storage hydropower deployment and enable increased hydropower flexibility from the existing fleet.
Capability to provide industry or other external perspective to help DOE research have real-world impact.
Ability to learn new things and welcome intellectual challenges.
Ability to work on a dynamic, supportive team.
Ability to clearly communicate complex, technical ideas to colleagues and management.
